Our school’s multicultural festival is a colourful reminder that people from all different kinds of cultural backgrounds can come together and celebrate their diversity whether it be through sharing traditional snacks, sports, or even music!
On Tuesday the 21st, the school gathered to take part in the annual multicultural festival organised by Ms Cox and the student union, this year’s theme being ‘Deep within Our Roots’, and as many of us may have seen, people dressed proudly in traditional clothing from their own countries to celebrate the day. The festivities started off with an assembly showcasing everybody’s outfits and some beautiful performances from several cultural groups led by students and guests. Once it wrapped up, students were allowed to leave and enjoy the activities waiting in store for them.
The paths of the school were lined with an abundance of stalls catering food, fashion, and activities for everybody to try. This included activities like traditional Chinese paper cutting, lantern making, Columbian and Brazilian games, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ochre painting, Pacifica region snacks and games, Indian Henna and so many more. If students were interested in trying new foods there was also food stalls offering Chinese spring rolls, snacks from the Philippines, Vietnamese cuisine, ice cream mochi, Taiwanese winter melon tea, fried rice, and tangyuan.
The multicultural festival is not only a day to have fun and try new foods, but it is also a reflection of the rich cultural heritage engraved in the student body of our school. Many of the stalls and activities wouldn’t be possible without the diversity displayed by everyone and the openness of our community that is necessary to facilitate cultural sharing and appreciation. Though our multicultural festival is a school festival, the beauty of embracing diversity is a concept that’ll be around wherever we go. Though there is land and language separating different cultures; celebration and pride in our cultures is a universal experience.
Just like previous years, the multicultural festival went off without a hitch and everybody enjoyed the energetic atmosphere of the festival. The highlights of the festival was not only the activities for some people but being able to share the multicultural experience with their friends. Next year, we hope to see even greater leaps and bounds in the diversity of our school community.
